Ultimate Mistake

The following sign is displayed in many places in MINDEF and SAF camps.
It read:
The only way to avoid making mistakes
is not to do anything.
And that,
in the final analysis,
will be the Ultimate Mistake.
It is the spirit that says the person who fails is the person who does not try.
The worst mistake (refered to as the Ultimate Mistake)
is to do nothing, and simply wait for trouble to come.
Many of you may be familiar with the saying:
If I hear, I forget.
If I see, I remember.
If I do, I understand.
This is very true.
Let us not be just listeners and talkers.
Let us not be simply onlookers and observers.
Let us seek to be doers and learners.
The Ultimate Mistake lies in not thinking and not trying.
Avoiding the Ultimate Mistake lies in Learning by Doing.

Helping butterfly to fly

There is a egg which hatches into a caterpillar in Weiliang's ecogarden. He was very happy. He will spend some time everyday to observe how the caterpillar eats and grows daily.

One day after school, he realise the caterpillar is making a cocoon out of its own body. He is very excited, for he knew that while it is in the cocoon, the caterpillar will change into a butterfly. When the butterfly is ready, it will start to break through the cocoon. So Weiliang waited patiently day after day.

Finally a hole appears. Weiliang saw the butterfly struggles to come out of the cocoon through the hole. He stood by and watched with great anticipation...
After half an hour, it is still struggling... so Weiliang thought of a brillant idea!!! He decided to help the poor butterfly. He ran into his house as fast as he could and he fetch the first scissors he could find and ran back to the garden.
He held his breathe and carefully sniped open the cocoon, waiting eagerly for the butterfly to spread its beautiful wings and fly.

5 seconds has passed... the butterfly looked oddly fat...

30 seconds has passed... it tried to spread open its tiny wings to fly..

1 minute has passed.. it is still trying...

5 minutes has passed.. it has not take off.... it looks tired...

10 minutes has passed... it gave up... it knew it can never fly...

At this moment, Weiliang seems to understood what the butterfly felt.. Tears begun to well up in his eyes... for he realised at that moment.. he is the reason why the butterfly could not fly...

Weiliang's “help” has destroyed the butterfly.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The butterfly can fly because it has to struggle to come out of the cocoon. The pushing forces lots of enzymes from the body to the wing tips. This strengthens the muscles, and reduces the body weight. In this way, the butterfly will be able to fly the moment it comes out of the cocoon. Otherwise it will simply fall to the ground, crawl around with a swollen body and shrunken wings, and soon die.If the butterfly is not left to struggle to come out of the cocoon, it will never fly.
We can learn an important lesson from the butterfly. If we do not have struggles and challenges in our work, we will never grow strong and capable. If life has no difficulties, we will become weak and helpless.
